Senior lead engineer at Vessel Technologies

Birmingham, Alabama

I built most of the projects here for myself. I like making things nobody else is doing, or nobody is doing well, especially when they solve a problem in my own day.

Work

  1. 2018

Auburn University, Biomedical sciences, cum laude

Pre-med. I'd been building Arduino projects since high school and used those skills in biology research on zebra finches, looking at the generational effects of stress. After graduating I realized I didn't want six more years of school or the memorization biology and chemistry demand. I liked using hardware I built, running software I wrote, to get something done.

  2. 2018 to 2023

    Deft Dynamics, Software developer

A Birmingham company that grows its own research projects into hardware businesses. Brigand Arms, the first of them, makes ultra-lightweight carbon fiber AR‑15 parts. At Moxie IoT we took inventors' ideas to sellable, app-connected products with custom PCBs, firmware, enclosures and apps. I also worked on the Flutter app for APEX Pro, a driving coach that gives racers real-time feedback. Between them I saw the hardware, software, manufacturing and business sides of a real product.

  3. 2023 to 2024

    Tocaro Blue

Tocaro Blue builds software that modernizes marine sensors. Moxie IoT had been their lead engineering firm since 2019, and they bought it in 2023. We worked on Proteus, which takes the feed from an ordinary marine radar and uses machine learning to detect, classify and track the objects around a boat, for pilots and for autonomous control.

  4. 2024 to now

Vessel Technologies, Senior lead engineer, Vessel Intelligence

Vessel designs and manufactures apartment buildings. Moxie IoT had done consulting work for Vessel, and in May 2024 I left Tocaro Blue to join as a software engineer. I was promoted to senior lead engineer in 2026. Vessel Intelligence covers our smart home systems, from hardware and software to integrations, and the in-house tools the company uses.
